Understanding Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder is a psychiatric Diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defines as by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated mood clinically referred as mania or hypo-mania. Individuals with the Bipolar Disorder experience maniac episodes which also include depressive episodes or symptoms. Extreme Maniac episodes can lead to hallucinations and delusions.. There are different different levels of the Bipolar Disorder that are based on the severity of the Mood Disorder, These levels are Bipolar I , Bipolar II and cyclothymia, and there is also others.

Bipolar I is a mood disorder that is characterized by at least one manic or mixed episode. There may be episodes of hypo-mania or major depression as well. It's a sub diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and conforms to the classic concept of manic depressive illness.

Bipolar II is a Bipolar spectrum disorder characterized by at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode, with this disorder depressive episodes are more frequent and more intense than a manic episode.

Cyclothymic is a condition which causes milder hypomanic and depressive episodes. It's defined in the Bipolar spectrum. Thus disorder is milder than Bipolar II. A single episode of hypomanic is sufficient to diagnose cyclothymic disorder.

How To Diagnos Bipolar: Unfortunately there are no tests to determine Bipolar disorder the only thing they can do is diagnos the disorder by Psychiatric counseling and a series of questions to asses what's going on. They can also do a blood test to help determine the disorder. They are trying to come up with an image through an MRI to determine if a person has Bipolar. One sign of the Bipolar disorder is suicidal thought or attempts. Another sign is you feel like your on a roller coaster ride one minute your really happy and laughing and then the next you feel down and crying for no apparent reason.

Treatment for Individuals with Bipolar: Through a psychriatric assesment they can put you on medications to help you cope with the Bipolar disorder. They have medications such as Lithum.lamitical,seroquel,depakote,etc. These medications help keep you chemically balanced and help stabalize your moods.

If you have the Bipolar disorder don't be afraid to get treatment to make you better, I know alot of people stereotype someone who has Bipolar as if they are crazy and to stay away from someone with the illness because they heard rumors of someone with it can lose it at anytime and attack them but being someone like me who has a mild case of Bipolar that rumor is definetly not true, I'm as normall as the next person but I go through the emotions of being happy and then feeling down but I'm also human and we all feel emotions.
